Gary Clark Jr. Brings his Blues to The Paramount

If you failed to make it to the Paramount in Huntington NY on November 7th you missed a hell of a show from Gary Clark Jr.

Clark’s been bringing his guitar/classic blues sounds to audiences for close to a dozen years and this night showed why.

Kicking it off, trading licks with King Zapata, on “Bright Lights” it was obvious this 1600+ crowd was in for a treat. Clark was backed by Zapata (guitar), Jon Deas on keyboards, Elijah Ford on bass and JJ Johnson on Drums. Even without Clark this band would be worth checking out but together they bring it to a whole new level.

As he moved through the set and around the Paramount stage there were high’s and low’s. Not to suggest there was ever a low moment, just a bit of slow down. Songs like “You Saved Me” or “Feelin’ Like A Million” were crowd soothing and mellow.

Guitarists know just watching the fretwork is a show in itself. This was prevalent on every song including  “What about Us”, “Next Door Neighbor Blues” , “When I’m Gone” and many more. Overall it was a great set with my personal favorites being “The Guitar Man” and “When My Train Pulls In”

Whether you are a Clark fan or not you could feel his music. After the show I was speaking to someone who said “it wasn’t a very exciting show” to which I responded “the band, lights, sound and show in its entirety were quite impressive if you ask me.” Most of those in attendance agreed as the Founder Room was full of people in awe of Clark’s talent.

This was his first, hopefully not last, show at this, Pollstar, top rated venue. Clark clearly demonstrated why he’s also top rated, has continued success, and why you’ll be seeing him, bringing his blues, for a very long time.
